Microsoft announced a slew of games during their 2014 E3 Media briefing. Did they knock it out the park? I break it down for you and give you my opinion.
One thing you cannot take away from Microsoft this year is that they listened in comparison to last year. On top of that they delivered on their promise of an all games media brief.
The briefing started with a intro for Sledgehammer games rendition of the next iteration in the Call of Duty franchise. Call of Duty: Advance Warfare showed some sly improvements to certain tech in weaponry. Smart grenades and using your environment to shield from drones. A gorgeous gameplay trailer and Call of Duty just doesn’t stop.
Then attention was given to Turn 10 studios and Forza 5 with a new free track based on the Nürburgring and the announcement of Forza Horizon 2 releasing on Sept 30,2014.
Evolve will have a exclusive Beta and content on Xbox. There was a gameplay video that showed the monster in a giant form against the 4 hunters. The game looks sharp.
We shift to Ubisoft and the “next-gen” iteration of Assassin’s Creed. With Assassin’s Creed: Unity. The title character’s name is Arnold Victor Dorian. They showed a four player co-op demonstration of the game and it worked so smoothly as you see each character get their targets. Looking forward to creating my own brotherhood of Assassins.
We saw a trailer for Dragon Age: Inquisition which is scheduled for an October 7th release. The game looks amazing and cannot wait to get my hands on it.
Here is my gem of the briefing. Sunset Overdrive. Insomniac Games has a winner in this game screamed at me as an old punk song from The Clash. This game is a rebellious punk feel to me. It looked amazing as a gameplay trailer showed a huge monster as Ted Price showed us the game world. Definitely best of the show for me.
There was this hysterical Dead Rising 3 DLC that adds all the Dead Rising title characters in and some very interest Capcom suits and weapons based on other Capcom games.
Harmonix came out to discuss that there will be a new Dance Central, Dance Central Spotlight for the Xbox One and it will be a digital only game that will be available this September.
Fable Legends and Lionhead Studios was next with a four player game player demo. Showing team game play against the fifth player as the “villain” You get to see the villain setting traps and enemies as the heroes advance through the map.
Project Spark had a small video package that included some new “galaxies” as well as a beloved “Rare” character in Conker. He chainsaw’s the title and says that it’s been ten years since his last game maybe it’s time to make one. Nice little jab at fans waiting on the new Conker.
A new IP was introduced. Ori and the Blind Forest is done by Moon studios. The Ip from what the trailer shows this little white creature that gets raised by a giant character that reminds me something out of a Miyazaki film. Within the game there is a giant owl that seems to be the primary nemesis of Ori and the poor little guy loses his “founder”. It pulled at my heartstring and looks to be an amazing game on Xbox One.
After this beautiful game came the announcement for HALO: The Master Chief Collection and it has to be one of the best bundles ever made. It is scheduled for release on November 11, 2014. The package comes with Halo 1: Anniversary, Halo 2: Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 4/ Spartan Ops, as well as 100 maps for the games and Halo 2’s Multiplayer intact. There will be a beta for Halo 5 as well as the inclusion of the Nightfall-Ridley Scott’s Halo live-action series. Can’t ask for a better deal all on one disk!
We started to see the start of “indie games” and I put that in quotations as they were not really presented as such but more of the ID@XBOX games. First we got a look at Inside from Playdead Studios the makers of Limbo. After that was a slew of other titles which there was one that jumped out at me called Cuphead which looked like one of those old cartoons that kids watched in movie theaters back in the heydays. The link is above for a full list of the games coming.
Of course the games were followed by a surprise new game for Lara Croft: Rise of the Tomb Raider. The game looks amazing and looks like crystal dynamics is back in the game with Lara and it shows.
The Witcher III: The Wild Hunt made a beautiful gameplay trailer that shows Geralt going after a Griffon while at the same time saving a woman from bandits.
The devs of Killer Instinct announced Phantom Dust revival from the original Xbox. The game was a cult classic and looking to make big waves on Xbox One.
Now for one of the biggest games last year. Tom Clancy’s The Division released new gameplay footage and showed a team that started with two players and then ended with another two joining them in the city. The fourth person is on a drone and communicating through a tablet. The team gets into a little trouble and clears the enemies from midtown south base. It looks amazing! They are really sharpening this up.
Platinum Games had a trailer for Scalebound which reminded me of Legend of Zelda meets Monster Hunter. The game just had a video trailer and not real in game footage but looks nice would like to see more on it first before making a judgment call.
The last bit of the show was a wish come true for many an Xbox fan, as it sees the return of CRACKDOWN. The game is now being done by Cloudgine which is led by the original creator of Crackdown. Crackdown is the first open world game that had super cops that just leapt all over the place. The game looked beautiful and the fact that a good portion was at night and seeing the vehicles all “Tron-like was just so pretty.
Looking forward to when this gets a release date.
